Are We Not Thinking?

Andrew wonders if stepping on Obama is reallya good idea for the McCain campaign:

I guess some of the McCain team believe that announcing his veep choice tonight as a way to step on Obama’s acceptance speech is brilliant politics. I’m not sure that denying the first black candidate a clear shot at making his case on the anniversary of the March on Washington is such a great idea.

I think this might be overstating it a bit, because it would count on the media drawing the conclusion and making the connection. But if they did, and if the narrative did become that McCain showed bad form by trying to step on such an historic moment, then yes, I think it could be really, really damaging. More likely though, I think it’s probably just bad politics because Obama’s speech would get more attention than McCain’s VP.
