Brzezinski Not Hot On “Afghan Surge”

So the former national security adviser and sometimes Obama advisers tells HuffPo:

“I think we’re literally running the risk of unintentionally doing what the Russians did. And that, if it happens, would be a tragedy,” Brzezinski told the Huffington Post on Friday. “When we first went into Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban, we were actually welcomed by an overwhelming majority of Afghans. They did not see us as invaders, as they saw the Soviets.”

That’s because we didn’t send a very large force into Afghanistan, but rather a handful of special ops and technical personnel to direct air assaults and left the heavy lifting to the locals. So this sort of really large, occupational force is anathema to what we accomplished there earlier, and not something likely to go over well in certain areas of the country.

On the other hand, there’s nothing to say it could absolutely not work, it would just have to be something done in concert with the government and the ruling warlords, not telling them to “go to hell.”
