Why Don’t You Learn

Dear sweet Jeebus, Josh Marshall is screaming “racist” again.

But, let’s face it, John McCain is running a campaign almost entirely based on straight up lies. Not just exaggerations or half truths but the sort of straight up, up-is-down mind-blowers we’ve become so accustomed to from the current occupants of the White House. And today McCain comes out with this rancid, race-baiting ad based on another lie. Willie Horton looks mild by comparison. (And remember, President George H.W. Bush never ran the Willie Horton ad himself. It was an outside group. He wasn’t willing to degrade himself that far.) As TPM Reader JM said below, at least Horton actually was released on a furlough. This is ugly stuff. And this is an ugly person. There’s clearly no level of sleaze this guy won’t stoop to to win this election.

Now let’s be honest, I don’t really care if Marshall calls the way McCain ties his shoes racist, what I do care about is that he’s done this before, with the celeb ad, and it blewback on Obama. You’d think you’d learn after the first time, but Marshall’s “lesson” seems to have been to get even more ridiculous. Today’s McCain video press release ad is despicable, dishonest, and unbelievably crass even by Rovian standards. But there’s nothing overtly racist in it that I can see. And indeed, Marshall doesn’t even argue that it’s racist. He just says it more or less in passing, invokes Willie Horton, and leaves it at that.

I guess my real problem is that this is why more people don’t take the blogosphere seriously. Serious and wonky writers like Ezra, Matt, and Hilzoy, as well as damn good commentators like Steve Benen and Kevin Drum, get lumped in with people like Marshall and the lowest common denominator wins out. It’s also the reason why actual racist trash like a Congressman calling the Obama’s uppity doesn’t get more attention.

So Josh, the next time you think “racist!,” turn off the computer for a little while ok?
