Of Minor Parties and Libertarians

TNR is publishing an excellent article that shows you just how ridiculous minor parties in America are.

The fact of the matter is that America’s political system, mostly because of single representative districts and winner take all status in the electoral college, isn’t designed for more than 2 competitive parties. Ross Perot got 1 of every 5 votes cast in 1992, and a big goose egg in the electoral college. So the kind of people that naturally gravitiate to minor parties are going to be a mix of the socially “unique” personalities and ideological purists who can’t remotely put together a serious political movement/coalition. I don’t know why we take them seriously.
