Sistani and the American Right

In case you missed it, the Grand Ayatollah Sistani has issued an edict forbidding the sale of food to Americans in Iraq.

As Ezra Klein noted, this underlines the true problem with John McCain’s, and the right in general, understanding of the larger world. The standard defense for McCain’s “100 years” comment is that he meant it as an enduring, peaceful, presence. The obvious problem being (obvious to anyone who doesn’t still give Bush a favorable rating anyway) is that the Iraqi people at large would never accept such an enduring presence, nor would the larger Arab-Muslim world. Which is harmless enough not to realize, so long as you aren’t running for President.
